Full report of the hoard previously published with emphasis on the coins (69/481). The discovery in 1718 on a Sark farm of an iron-bound pot, fourteen silver or silver-gilt embossed mounts and eighteen silver coins, was fortunately precisely recorded in engravings by George Vertue in 1725, although the treasure itself is lost. The curved mount portraying dolphins is without parallel; the thirteen phalerae embossed with real and mythical animals are almost certainly Thracian horse-ornaments of 1st century BC, and have interesting stylistic connections with the Gundestrup cauldron. The hoard could have been assembled, from loot say, anywhere in Gaul, and deposited about 40-30 BC. | |||||||||
