[SK 9771]. Results of recent excavations on the N and E gates of the upper Roman enclosure are combined with earlier records in a general chronological and architectural discussion of the gateways. The E gate sequence gives AD 100 as the approximate date of the first stone structure (probably including stone walls and interval towers). Early in 3rd century the E and N gates were reconstructed and flanked by towers with curved fronts, and the curtain wall and rampart were strengthened. Between 300 and 500 it seems likely that bastions were added and a wide shallow ditch dug. Little is known of the S gate, but the W gate revealed by collapse in 1836 was a single arch through a rectangular tower. There was medieval activity, defensive and domestic, at the E gate. Appended are reports on Roman and medieval pottery, glass, bones, and environmental evidence. | ||||||||||||||||
