Abstract:
SY 691899. Compiled from H St George Gray's records of his 1908-13 dig and illustrated with numerous contemporary photographs. The site had three main periods of use: 1, late Neolithic single-entrance henge with up to 45 deep rock-cut shafts, some with deliberately laid deposits; 2, conversion to an amphitheatre, possibly for Leg. II Aug. in Claudian/Neronian times; and 3, final use as an artillery fort of Civil War date, 1642-3.
