Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Report on excavations undertaken at 9 High Street, Stone, a tenement of the former Falcon Inn, in advance of road construction. The earliest structural evidence found was of a late medieval timber building, which it is suggested from the presence of storage vessels may have been a store room or buttery. Domestic animal bones were also recovered from this phase, as were remains of cultivated, imported and wild plants including various cereals. The earliest pottery from the excavations dates from the twelfth to thirteenth centuries, probably a period of growth for the secular settlement of Stone. Leather fragments suggest the development of small-scale crafts and industry, shoe manufacturing later becoming a major source of employment in Stone. The foundation of a substantial building and possible associated floor surfaces was dated to the late-fifteenth to early-sixteenth century. The site continued to be redeveloped through the later post-medieval period, destroying much of the earlier evidence for activity, although a dump of late-seventeenth-century pottery and associated clay pipes was found.
