Abstract:
Summary of the results of an architectural analysis and interpretation of the surviving, conserved structure of the ruins of Throwley Old Hall in north Staffordshire. The location and context of the hall are described, along with the descent of the property. The analysis of the surviving fabric identifies four phases, the earliest of which was a medieval hall house including a now-demolished hall and an upstanding crosswing adjacent to the east end of the former hall range. This was substantially enlarged in the second phase, including construction of a stair turret leading from the hall. An additional building was added at the north-east corner of the complex in the third phase, of which little remains standing; this was probably a discrete domestic dwelling. The two buildings were linked together in the final phase, with the construction of a substantial tower block which served as a lobby entry, staircase and observation tower.
