Abstract:
Downside Mill on the river Mole in Surrey was acquired in 1770 by industrialist Alexander Raby, who converted it for metalworking and expanded the site towards the end of the 18th century, adding a second mill. This was during a period when the industry was seeking new methods of producing carbon-free wrought iron. In 2008 a team from Surrey Archaeological Society carried out a small training excavation in the area where the older mill building and foundry had stood, aiming to discover whether Raby had installed a reverberatory furnace when he expanded the works, and if so, whether he had used it for puddling, reworking scrap, reheating bar iron, or some combination of these. A wide range of slag was found, as well as sections of mill races and the probable location of the south waterwheel and gear mechanism. Analysis of some dense, dark slag confirmed that it was from an ironworking process using a coke- or coal-fuelled reverberatory furnace, perhaps an early puddling type furnace. However, at this early stage in the development of puddling there was considerable overlap between different processes; a definite conclusion regarding the origins of the slag therefore awaits future discoveries.
