Abstract:		 the author describes the geological structure and development of the Hampshire Basin and of the Solent River system. Associated with the river system is a sporadic but well documented assemblage of Lower and Middle Palaeolithic artefacts, the existence and distribution of which is linked to the underlying geology and the basin's more recent history. A synthesis of the Caenozoic and Pleistocene history of the area is presented as a backdrop to more detailed discussions presented elsewhere in the volume, along with a short discussion of the key future research issues related to understanding of the Solent River system
