Abstract:
A continuous reduction in the size of human teeth has been proceeding from the time of the 'classic' Neanderthals. It is suggested that the numerous fire-cracked stones in Mousterian levels denote cooking by heated stones; this would originally have been a means of thawing frozen carcase meat in glacial conditions and the change in diet would have reduced the need for large incisors and molars.
