Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Dating to 3rd millennium bc, and overlain by peat, the site had a segmented ditch and large numbers of pits, some directly connected with the extraction and rough-working of flint, others containing deposits of boulders packed about with sherds and flints brought from elsewhere. This second pit-type is best interpreted as sympathetic magic to ensure the "fertility" in flint of the site. Similar deposits occurred in the ditch, and in all 266 Sandhills pots (29 reconstructable forms) were represented. The flint industry is of Late Neo type with some Larnian elements. The occupation material which fills some court cairns and long barrows may also represent sympathetic magic, in the interests of the living rather than the dead. | |||||||||||
