Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Work on lake sediments in the Lake District had shown good correlation between accelerated erosion of mineral soils and pollen evidence for human interference with forest on hill slopes, and recent work in three regions of NW Scotland (an area physiographically and climatically similar to the Lake District) has supported this correlation. For that part of the record relevant to archaeology, man appears to have had little effect on vegetation history in the N Highlands until c 1500 BC, with two exceptions. At Loch Tarff (Great Glen) there is evidence for human destruction of hill woodland from c 3000 BC, as in NW England. At Loch Clair (Wester Ross) there are pronounced changes in pollen curves suggesting forest fires and human interference (weeds of cultivation) at c 3500 BC - the earliest traces of man in the N Scottish vegetation record. | ||||
