Sixteen sites in and around a small bog in the Black Mountains, Powys, were investigated by means of pollen analysis and radiocarbon dating, and a series of pollen assemblage zones was identified. Alder may have taken advantage of a Meso clearance at c 8000 BP, and there is circumstantial evidence of heath maintenance by burning. Ombrogenous peat growth began generally c 5800-5500 BP. The classic elm decline is variably represented, and three subsequent declines are noted at c 4600 BP, c 4000 BP, and c 2850 BP. Substantial human effects are noted in the Bronze Age and some earlier Iron Age woodland regeneration took place before renewed clearance from RB times onwards. Au(abr) | |||||||||
