An assessment of current and future fields of research in monastic archaeology. Problems in the definition and identification of monasteries in archaeological terms are complex and vary with each site to the extent that standard criteria are impossible to establish. Historical sources and pottery remain the most important dating evidence, but ought to be supplemented with independent scientific methods of dating. The relationship between monastery and secular world can be seen in the location of monastic sites, in their political role and in the economic system of which they were part. A R
