Abstract:
[NM 2723]. An account of excavations at the monastic settlement on Iona from 1966 to 1968. A lime clamp was dated by a sherd of imported Mediterranean pottery to 550-650 AD, and this sherd remains the only pottery associated with a pre-Viking deposit on the site. Grass-tempered sherds found unstratified or in post-Viking levels are attributed to a postulated phase of grass-tempered wares in W Britain in 10th to 12th centuries. A complex of post-holes beneath the Benedictine bakehouse dates to 563-800 AD, a rectangular building to 8th century and a rich deposit of food debris (including many meat-bones) to later 8th century.
