Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A turf and timber rampart enclosing 4½ acres seals occupation levels and sill-beams which may belong to a larger fort (Phase 1). The rampart of Ph II had been refaced once before being cut back for the insertion of a stone facing (Ph III, first half of 2nd cent). The inner of three ditches was recut three or more times before being refilled and levelled in Ph III. Behind the rampart, sill-beams and an oven were sealed by a layer containing samian pottery of AD 80-130. In Ph IV occupation material accumulated over the ditches, perhaps from civil occupation after the abandonment of the fort by about 150-60. No evidence of dismantling was found. Pottery found after ploughing outside the defences supports the notion of a larger fort in Ph I, and voussoir stones incorporated in the Ph. III wall suggest re-use of building material from an earlier phase. |
