Abstract:
A small circular stone building on the Ile Modez (Côtes-du-Nord) probably survives from early medieval ecclesiastical activity. Formerly interpreted as a primitive chapel or a monastic cell, the structure resembles Irish round towers in general dimensions and in its raised entrance, apparently an original feature. A monastic foundation on the island is attributed to an Irish monk, Modez, and Irish infiuence is considered, but an independent Gaulish tradition of towers is preferred. A circular stone foundation nearby may be a hermit's cell, the complex associated with an early medieval monastery elsewhere on the island, unlocated but perhaps under the medieval priory. A H
