Abstract:		 The European Foundation PETRAE, created by departments from the universities of Liège, Bordeaux, and Besançon, aims to apply computer technology to epigraphic materials (texts and complete physical descriptions). Each word will be subjected to lexicological, morphological, and syntactical analysis, a general index verborum will be constructed, and a retrieval system established for words and grammatical constructions. Application of this method to a sample of 20 Roman 'military diplomas' involved 'semi-automatic' analysis. In particular the document of Han-sur-Lesse was found not to conform to the 'normal' diploma word patterns and its identity as a discharge certificate was confirmed. (Inf ex M M R)
