Abstract:
When Wheeler began his career in 1913 the profession of archaeologist scarcely existed; but by the 1920s he was not only building on Pitt Rivers's pioneering achievements in excavation techniques, but working towards the provision of full professional training by means of the London Institute of Archaeology. Tribute is paid to his versatility as well as his exceptional ability: particularly notable are his major role in the reconstruction of the British Academy, his persuasive manner with the public and his remarkable achievements in Indian archaeology, as well as his draughtsmanship, administrative skills, and innovative flair.
