Abstract:
A difficulty arises over the dating of the Paviland burial: its 14C determination falls in a period of permafrost, whereas the fauna from the cave includes temperate climate species. The Upper Palaeolithic artefacts may therefore belong with the fauna, the skeleton being deposited much later. 14C assay of the animal bones may resolve the problem. At Pontnewydd Cave, St Asaph, a human molar (now lost) was recovered together with artefacts of MAT type.
