Outlines some of the principal problems noted in preliminary research on this elephant tusk horn with its silver gilt and enamel mountings. The core may be S Italian make of 12th or 13th century; the mounts were added in the second quarter of 14th century in England. The baldric is associated with the Randolph Earls of Moray and was attached to the horn by 1604, but incorporates a hookplate from an earlier baldric. |
