Abstract:
Field survey based on cartographic evidence revealed the existence of 118 sites, concentrated on the N and W edges of the Anglo-Norman settlement pattern in the county. Limited archaeological and historical evidence helped to confirm that the sites were generally Anglo-Norman defended farmsteads built in response to increasing Irish pressure in 13th and 14th centuries by smaller landholders unable to provide stone defences. The central platforms are smaller than in English examples, and very few sites have multiple enclosures or adjacent earthworks. Over 51% have been destroyed since 1840. Au(abr)
