Abstract:
Examines the rise of the medieval boroughs in Merseyside and reconstructs, with the aid of historic maps and other documents, their original nuclei and plans. The study concentrates on three important towns, Liverpool, Newton-le-Willows, and Prescot, with shorter discussion of West Derby, Ormskirk, Roby, and Hale which had a brief life in 13th and 14th centuries. A landscape history of Newton-le-Willows is appended.
