Abstract:
SX 937567. Pottery dug from the cave before 1852 is found to belong to classes 1 and 4 of the Trevisker series. The Ash Hole pottery therefore fits into a context which includes 150 sites, mostly in SW England. One vessel confirms the previously postulated development from impressed cord to incised decoration. The relationship between Trevisker wares and those of the S Dorset province of Wessex is discussed; the Trevisker pottery is seen to have influenced the Wessex biconical urn and the globular urns of Calkin type II. The Hampshire-Wiltshire province of Wessex was affected by Trevisker wares to a superficial degree only, and reciprocal influence from Wessex to the SW was likewise slight. In the Ornament Horizon/Taunton phase the essential continuity of the Trevisker ceramic tradition remained unbroken, although the wares became harder and thinner. A controlled excavation of the remaining deposits of the cave would permit the pottery finds to be set in their cultural and economic context.
