Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The parade-mask from the fort at Echzell was found in a pit filled with rubbish from a fire which took place between 175 and 185. Associated material included Trier samian, local Echzeller Ware, a bronze shield-boss and various iron objects. The mask is of iron, and the removal of rust using a fine sand-blasting technique revealed slight traces of silvering, possibly on the face only. The facial features and hairstyle are paralleled on masks from Strass-Moos and from the 3rd century Straubing treasure. Origins of the style lie in the Hadrianic period, the Thames head of Hadrian being comparable. |
