Examines: the likely size of Agricola's army (8 000 auxiliary infantry, 5 000 cavalry, c 8000 legionaries?); his route (with camps 16-20 km apart) and the length of the column (at least 15km); the campaign length (under two months?); reconnaissance with guides and friendly tribesmen; the burdens of soldiers and beasts; supplies - some foraging for grain and grass, some purchases, some fleet-deliveries (look for temporary depots of fleet?); inland transit camps? Food and water needs per day are set out, and regular reference is made to comparative data from 19th century S African campaigns.
