Abstract:
[SP 3379]. A comprehensive account of information derived from documentary and archaeological sources about the Cathedral church demolished at the Dissolution. Foundation of the Priory was in 1043 (Leofric and Godiva); no firm evidence for a pre-Conquest church was found, though it may have been destroyed by medieval levelling. The Cathedral had been similar in scale to Canterbury Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. Among the conventual buildings which were explored was an unusual square dorter. Skeletons showed a high proportion of abnormality (arthritis and an instance of cranial deformation), but some brethren had possessed fine objects, and animal bones show that meat was eaten. Specialist contributions relate to the documentary history, the window glass (art historical and chemical analytical aspects), wall plaster, patterned floor-tiles, bronzes, glassware, decorated stonework, coins and jetons, woollen cloth and human and animal bones.
