[SP 344752]. Phases of the fort so far definable are: Phase 1, AD 60-64, barracks and other buildings and the "gyrus-vivarium"; II, AD 64-?70, the defences, principia, ?praetorium, granaries, etc; III, ?70-74, reduction in area and two new buildings within the "gyrus". Abandonment is attributed to Frontinus' need for troops in the Silurian campaign. Period IV consists of a new ditch aligned on the E defences of Phase II, Hadrianic or later. The units were various and possibly mixed; legionary and cavalry equipment is attested. Discussed in detail are the "gyrus-vivarium", the water supplies, coins, pottery, brooches, small bronzes, legionary armour, glass, intaglio, ironwork, and the medieval iron smelting furnaces overlying the Roman levels. |
