SP 535795. A bronze dolphin-loop buckle with horse-head crests and an engraved plate showing peacocks flanking a fruit tree belongs to Hawkes Type IB of quasi-military buckles, and is the finest yet found. The twenty-six examples of this class, made in a variety of styles, imply considerable British production (? W Midlands). The context of this Tripontium buckle, and other factors, argue for a late 4th century date rather than early 5th. The Christian symbolism of the design - a Tree of Life - is expounded in its Late Roman context and its presence in a presumed town garrison remarked. |
