Technical examination (thin sections, electron microprobe analysis, refiring tests, SEM, etc) suggested that the most important factors were: use of 20-30% of grog, sand, and flint; skill in forming and shaping; control of firing and the physical characteristics of the glassy layer. Its success lay not so much in 'secret ingredients' as in its highly vitrified, weather-resistant nature. The grog and matrix are of Dorset/Devon ball clays. |
