Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Publication of three cremation burials, found in 1955 and 1969, from Trier-Olewig: two of Roman date, the third late La Tène. Besides pottery (possibly including a Dr IB amphora), the third burial contains fragments of a bronze helmet and a nearly complete, but bent sword in a bronze scabbard, two triangular knives (matched at Welwyn Garden City), two pairs of shears, a fragmentary spearhead, and other iron fragments. This is compared with other warrior-burials from the Mosel area, which are divided into two groups: sword- and spear-bearers. Aspects of the Gaulish nobility and their weaponry are considered. Many of the finds that have been used to demonstrate a pre-Roman origin for Trier are shown to be either early La Tène or early Roman in date; there is thus no evidence to support the theory that Roman Trier was preceded by a major Treveran oppidum. The Titelberg (Luxemburg) oppidum is most likely to have filled this role. M G S |
