Abstract:
Project SHERD (Sorting Highgate Excavation's Roman Debris) was designed to assist in reconstructing the large amounts of fragmentary material from the 1st-2nd century kiln site. By using statistical models of the relationships between rim and base sherds, and geometric models of vessel forms, reconstructions were made mathematically on the basis of a simple empirical classification of rim and base forms. Two advantages accrue: vessel forms can be reconstructed on very fragmentary material; and the waster output can be efficiently and effectively described. Au(adp)
