Abstract:
TL 237351. Found in a river bed, this tool is of a type known from RB hoards but also distributed widely in time and space. Examination of four sections cut from the auger showed it to be of wrought iron with a varying carbon content. To increase the hardness of the spoon-edge, several pieces of carburised material had been welded on; but the edge is of uneven quality, either because subsequent sharpening wore away the carburised area, or because the smith misjudged. Heat-treatment of the spoon-end had given it a maximum (but non-uniform) hardness comparable with that of modern woodworking tools. On technological grounds it could be assigned to the Viking or medieval period, but a Roman date should not be ruled out.
