TG 230035. Metallurgical examination of material excavated from a Roman road-surface thirty years ago has revealed fragments of moulds, crucibles and metal scrap. The moulds had been fired at fairly high temperature and were meant for the production of bronze ornaments and small utensils by the lost-wax process. Crucibles occurred in two different wares, most often in a dark, very porous ware, but two sherds of a fine, dense ware were also found. Two crucibles, one in each of these wares, were of the triangular EIA pattern; the remainder were normal Roman hemispherical shapes. Fragments of brooches and other ornaments, sheet bronze clippings and the like made up the rest of the collection. Analysis of some metallic dross indicated a leaded tin-bronze; zinc, where present, was in small amounts suggesting no more than that provided by scrap metal. |
