Abstract:
An experiment to simulate the conditions of shaft furnaces of AD 300-700 found in N Germany and Jutland was recently performed in a Danish steelworks. A furnace was built over a pit, to the pattern of the Drengsted examples, fired with large charcoal and then charged with bog ore roasted according to Evenstad's description (see 69/421). Temperatures and quantities were recorded as firing progressed; a temperature of 1200oc was maintained with difficulty. On completion the furnace was sectioned axially to reveal a compact slag lump in the bottom, and various changes in the lining of the shaft. This type of smelting produces furnace bottoms of slag such as the E Anglian example in the Norwich Museum.
