Abstract:
Short note mentioning some of the fieldwork recently undertaken by the South Oxfordshire Archaeological Group, which has been focusing on areas of proposed road improvements and housing schemes. Findings have included medieval pottery alongside the Henley--Reading road (A4115); an odd angular deflection in an enclosure bank and ditch in Highwood, Harpsden, leading to a circular mound scattered with mostly minute tile fragments, three of which were identifiable as Roman; and surface finds of masses of Roman sherds and burnt clay fragments in Swan Wood, Highmoor, perhaps indicating a pottery kiln. In addition there is a paragraph on a type of feature found in beech woods throughout South Oxfordshire. These rectangular pits with spoil thrown up on one side are said to have been dug by sawyers, who would fell trees and then cut up the trunks over the pit. A fine example can be found at Goring Heath. LD
