Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report Abstract:	Introduction to the present edition of the Newsletter, outlining its response to the evolving situation for 'rescue' archaeology. There is now a much greater general awareness of the need to record archaeological evidence before it is destroyed by redevelopment, and increased government grants mean that a far more effective local response can be made than previously. There is thus an increasing need to develop rational policies toward threatened sites in order to obtain the maximum amount of relevant evidence, making decisions on archaeological priorities rather than excavating indiscriminately. The scope of the Newsletter has therefore been broadened to include short notes and papers which may help to establish some regional priorities and to synthesize recent work. It also includes short accounts of the work of two organisations within the region: the Manshead Archaeological Society of Dunstable, and the Oxford Archaeological Excavation Committee. LD
