The Manshead Archaeological Society of Dunstable celebrated its twenty-first anniversary last year. It was founded in 1951 when a group of friends who had been undertaking archaeological fieldwork since the 1930s began a rescue excavation on Puddlehill, a chalk down north of Dunstable which was being quarried away. The dig was scheduled to last three weeks but became a much larger project, attracting many more volunteers and leading to the formation of the Society. The nature of the activities undertaken by the Society is outlined in this article. LD |
