Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report Abstract:	Archaeological sites are being destroyed at an unprecedented rate, and there is currently a need for a method by which the essential features of an earthwork site can be recorded with a maximum of detail in a minimum of time. The authors of this article have developed a technique of sketch mapping which could meet this need; its main advantages are outlined here before the basic method itself is described. LD
