Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Short note summarising findings from excavations at the Beech House Hotel site in Dorchester-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. The work affirmed the siting of the western and northern defences of the Roman town, and found a late 1st century defensive ditch. An area excavation revealed a 3rd century Romano-British townhouse covered by extensive evidence of late Roman industrial working in the form of a complex of kilns, ovens and hearths. Two early Saxon sunken huts dug into the Roman levels were excavated, and three distinct phases of Anglo-Saxon flint and clay-walled buildings of the 6th to 9th centuries were also identified. There appears to have been little subsequent medieval occupation or disturbance, providing confirmatory evidence of the decline of Dorchester during the later Saxon period. |
