Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Two archaeological excavations, at Low Common and Whitwood Common, both near Whitwood, south-west of Castleford, have revealed evidence of settlement dating from the Late Iron Age and Roman periods. The earlier phases of both sites provide evidence of ditch and bank defensive enclosures with roundhouses, and both sites also appear to have been abandoned and subsequently reoccupied in the later Roman period. Very few artefacts were recovered from either site, the largest assemblages in both cases being Roman pottery. This report also reviews the landscape context of these and other contemporary sites in the hinterland of Roman Castleford. |
