Abstract:
Obituary for Arnold Aspinall, a pioneer in the application of scientific techniques to archaeological investigations. Arnold's particular research interest was in geophysical prospection and he liaised with members of the Ancient Monuments Laboratory and others in the development and use of fluxgate magnetometers and resistivity systems. From the early 1960s he carried out geophysical surveys throughout the country, including many in Yorkshire. Arnold studied physics at University College London and at Manchester, and was appointed Lecturer in Physics at Bradford Technical College in the early 1950s. Here he played a significant role in establishing the value of using nuclear analytical techniques in determining the provenance of archaeological artefacts. The college became a university, and in the 1980s Arnold was appointed as the first Head of Department of its School of Archaeological Sciences. In 2006 the university awarded him a Chair in Archaeological Sciences at a conference held to mark his 80th birthday. LD
