Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Booklet setting out the history and archaeology of Salford, which was transformed from a small medieval borough to a major industrial centre in the 19th century. A number of recent archaeological investigations at the heart of the medieval and post-medieval settlement have provided insights into Salford's development and growth. These investigations are outlined in an introduction before the history of the area is summarised, beginning with the prehistoric and Roman periods. The archaeological evidence for the medieval, post-medieval and industrial-era town, including 19th century workers' housing and remains of the textile and engineering industries, is then presented in sequence, alongside photographs of early buildings in the area that have since been demolished.
