Abstract:
ArcHeritage were commissioned by the National Trust to undertake a Conservation Management Plan for Carl Wark, a Scheduled Monument believed to represent a late Bronze Age to early Iron Age promontory fort, located on Hathersage Moor within the Burbage Valley in the Peak District National Park. The Conservation Plan documented the wide range of current and past uses of the site along with their potential to impact on the archaeological and ecological resource. The valley continued to be an important focus for activity through the medieval period and into modern times, with both the monument itself and the wider landscape being used for military training during the Second World War. The surrounding moorland played an integral role in the campaign for public access to the countryside from the late 19th century onwards, and the area has also been significant in the development of rock-climbing as a sport. The Conservation Plan has proposed a series of management policies as well as further work to enhance understanding of Carl Wark. LD
