Abstract:
Fieldwalking and total-collection surveys followed by excavation revealed the presence of a substantial quantity of flintwork on a clay-with-flints outcrop. Analysis of the material collected showed that the Mesolithic remains included flakes, blades, bladelets, cores, two microburins and ten microliths. Tranchet axes, roughouts and preforms were also found, suggesting that some forest clearance was taking place. Neolithic flint axes and debitage including polished axes indicate that the site continued to be exploited during that period. The implications for the production and trade of flint axes are considered. Other flintwork included arrowheads and other implements from both the earlier Neolithic and the later Neolithic/Early Bronze Age. Includes
