Abstract:
The history of the foundation, dissolution, refoundation and second dissolution of the Carthusian House of Jesus of Bethlehem of Sheen has been told a number of times in books dealing with the Carthusian order and in histories of Richmond. But apart from the approximate location €˜in the Old Deer Park near the Observatory, and a few unconnected details nothing has been written about the buildings and their plan. Yet of all the Carthusian monasteries in England, Sheen was the latest and the largest, the richest and the most closely associated with and protected by the Crown. Its plan, and some idea of the buildings, should certainly be of interest if they could be found. This paper attempts, from documentary evidence, to reconstruct that plan.
