Abstract:
Examines the evidence for the development of the two estates from prehistoric times. A notable feature of the estate revealed by the earliest written records is the presence of `hatches' or gates where ancient tracks leave the farmland to enter the common -- the majority of hatches have ancient farms next to them, seemingly situated to take advantage of grazing on the common. Records appear to date from when medieval expansion of the common was reaching its fullest extent. Since the fourteenth century at least one farmstead has disappeared. By 1614 the Polesden estate had grown from a medieval farmstead to a substantial estate of 391 acres, the basis of a country house estate. The estate was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1942.
