Abstract:
Of twenty-five timber-framed hall-houses examined in Kent, eight showed evidence of intermediate modification by division some time before a complete flooring-over and insertion of chimney-stack. Although no statistical argument can be offered from this much evidence, the possibility of intermediate flooring, or of the insertion of a gallery, should be considered whenever hall-houses are investigated. Such partial modification probably arose from the need to economise while making some improvements to comfort, part of the hall was floored and the remainder enclosed to form a smoke bay, much less efficient and safe than a brick stack, but much cheaper. Other contributory reasons for division, which took place between 1480 and 1660, were probably pressure on living space caused by increasing rents, combined with a desire to retain the open fireplace as a social focus. Examples from Surrey, Staffordshire and Warwickshire are also quoted (see also 70/728).
