[Q 355049]. The notion of Gallarus as one of the earliest churches in Ireland has been questioned by very few workers since its first expression in 1756, yet few of the arguments for a date before AD 800 can stand logical examination. "Primitive" does not have to mean "early", and parallels for individual features of Gallarus such as door and window argue for a considerably later date. Discussion of finial stones is included, the Romanesque church of Kilmalkedar nearby being particularly relevant. The evidence is circumstantial, but does indicate that a date of c 800 should not be accepted uncritically when Gallarus could be as late as 11th-12th century and therefore out of the mainstream of Irish church development. | |||
