[SU 735145]. Major excavations in 1972 revealed some 8% of the settlement, which contained a number of rectangular post-built structures of at least four phases and one sunken hut. The buildings were grouped and some had fences round them. Finds include grass-tempered and sandy pottery, ironwork and a hanging-bowl mount, and a date for the settlement in 6th-7th centuries is proposed. M Carver provides an account of the documents relating to topography of Chalton. | |||||
