SX 224974. Excavations revealed substantial remains of a fine manor house within an earlier ringwork. The stone house showed four building phases in late 12th and early 13th centuries, and was abandoned and gradually demolished in mid-14th. There was no visible trace of the hall belonging to the ringwork, but the late 12th-century camera had certainly been associated with a hall of earlier date. The manor buildings, disposed on four sides of a courtyard, comprised hall, camera, chapel, service rooms, lodgings and a gatehouse; a counter-balanced drawbridge of 13th century was also attested. Pottery and small finds are catalogued. | ||||||||||||
