Abstract:
Objections are raised on several counts to the use by archaeologists of the name 'Hamwih' to refer to the area of Southampton where Anglo-Saxon material is found. Although this is the earliest recorded spelling it is also the rarest; 'Hamwic' would be a better choice, but better still is to avoid all topographical and functional confusion by using 'Saxon Southampton' for the whole settlement, and modern street or district names for its component parts.
